In 1985, Michael Platt, an engineer by trade with a passion for gems and jewellery, knocked on the door of a Hatton Garden Workshop owned by Wayne Myers with a selection of his jewellery designs.
An important partnership and friendship between designer and craftsman was forged that day.
Wayne’s ability and talent to craft, interpret and create Michael’s designs from paper into beautiful living pieces of jewellery passed the rigorous standards that Michael demanded.
Wayne and Michael worked successfully together over the next few years designing and creating jewellery ranges for retailers. However they were often disenchanted by the way their ranges were presented and sold. Scant product knowledge, lack of enthusiasm, poor displays and standards led to, at best, a mediocre jewellery ‘retail’ experience. They felt they could do better.
In 1990, Michael ventured into retail and opened No 1 Church Road, Wimbledon Village, SW19 with Wayne’s backing in the Workshop. They aimed to provide a pleasing and comfortable environment where jewellery could be beautifully displayed and their passion for the product, wide knowledge and high standards would lead to an enjoyable retail experience for the customer. They were delighted to find the formula worked and soon established a regular clientele, broadened mostly by word of mouth recommendation.
When in 2002 Michael retired, it was a natural progression for Wayne to move into the retail side of the business, splitting his week between the shop and workshop. He is delighted to have direct personal contact working closely with clients, enjoying the fulfilment of producing beautiful pieces of jewellery to make some of their dreams come true.
